Step 01. Connect your external hard drive to Mac computer. (Note. Step 02. Once your external hard drive is connected, your Mac will ask you to use the external hard drive as a back-up device. Click on Use as Backup Disk button.
Plug in hard drive or SSD (alternatively you can use a NAS drive). You should see an alert on your Mac asking if you want to use the drive with Time Machine. Click Use as Backup Disk. When it’s asking you to format the external hard drive, click on Erase. In the sidebar, select the volume to which you want to copy/clone data. The volume you select will be the destination drive for the Restore operation. Select Restore from Disk Utility’s Edit menu. A sheet will drop down, asking you to select from a drop-down menu the source device to use for the Restore process. Select your storage device as the backup disk. Open Time Machine preferences from the Time Machine menu in the menu bar. Or choose Apple menu System Preferences, then click Time Machine. Click Select Backup Disk. Step 03. When it’s asking you to format the external hard drive, click on Erase. (Note. If you have important files on the external hard drive, please be careful.)
